The Super League, set up in 1996, is the premiere Rugby League organisation in Europe and consists of 11 teams from England and 1 from France. It has undergone numerous changes since then with relegation being introduced in 2002 and then being scrapped again with the introduction of a licencing system in 2009. This system is due to be replaced again at the start of the 2015 season with a return to relegation and promotion. The most successful team in Super League history is the Leeds Rhinos with 7 titles and the current champions are Wigan Warriors after beating Warrington in the 2016 final at Old Trafford.

Competition Structure
The Super League consists of 11 teams who play 23 rounds of matches. Each team plays each other home and away and then plays an extra match during Magic Weekend. The top 8 teams then go into a playoff system culminating in the Grand Final where the winners of the Super League are crowned. The playoff system is separated into two tiers of qualification;
Qualifying Playoffs – The teams finishing 1st to 4th play each other with the two winning sides progressing straigh to the semi-finals. The losing sides are not eliminated but move into the preliminary semi-final against the two winners of the elimination playoffs.
Elimination Playoffs – The teams finishing 5th to 8th play each other with the losers eliminated and the winners progressing to the preliminary semi-finals against the two losers of the qualifying playoffs.
The winners of the preliminary semi-finals the progress to the semi-finals where the highest ranked side gets the ‘Club Call’ and selects who they play against. The winners of the semi-finals the progress to the Grand Final.
