So, what exactly is the International Championship?
The International Championship may be one of the newest events on the snooker calendar but it has quickly become one of the most important tournaments in the sport thanks to its enormous level of prize money and ranking points.
The competition is held in China and although it has not been around nearly as long as other Asian events such as the Shanghai Masters or the Wuxi Classic, it has eclipsed though tournaments thanks to having the same amount of ranking points as the UK Championship and a winner’s prize fund of £125,000.
With this on offer the tournament is really on the same level as the traditional Triple Crown in the sport of the World Championship, Masters and the UK Championship and as a result all the big players will be competing in it each year when it comes around at the end of October.
The first year of the event was in 2012 when Judd Trump lifted the trophy having edged past Neil Robertson in the final 10-8, the high profile and high quality final going to show the significance of the competition.
In 2013 local lad Ding Junhui triumped but a year later he lost out in the qualifying round to Wang Zepang as Ricky Walden went on to win his third ranking title, defeating Mark Allen 10–7 in the final.
